1. Can I use normal (mono) images in a stereo viewer?

Yes, you can. You only have to make two copies of the single slide and mount it in a 41x101 (RBT) frame or two single 50x50 mm. frames. But you will not get any stereoscopic effect in the image! Only by moving the slide left or right, you get the impression of looking through a window.

2. Can I make from one single (mono) image a stereo image?

Yes, you can but it requires manipulation of the image. The image has to be scanned into a computer. Make two files of it and name it left and right. Then with a program like photoshop you have to manipulate parts of the image (left or right only) in such a way that some parts will be in the front and others to the background.

3. How do I make a stereo image in general?
4. I am starting with making stereo slides, what camera should I choose?
  • This decision depends on a lot of things:
From what kind of subjects do you want to take a picture; macro or landscape. 3D Macro camera's are rare and expensive. There are some options; the 'de Wijs' macro lens, the RBT macro adapter for their camera's, the old Macro Realist (very rare) or make your own macro camera....
  • For landscape there are more options in the second hand branche; Realist camera (23x21 mm.), the Belplasca (23x28), TDC (23x21), FED (23x28), RBT (23x33-36 new!), Spoetnic (55x55) and some more.
  • The prices vary depending on their availability, quallity and ofcourse features.
5. I am starting with making stereo slides, which slide frame format schould I choose?

Currently there are 4 frame formats most used:

  • 3D frame format 41x101 mm. for 23x16, 23x21, 23x28, 23x31,5 and 23x33 mm. (RBT system)
  • single 50x50 mm. frames (2x2")
  • 3D frame format 60x130 mm. for medium format slides up to 55x55 mm.
  • single 70x70 mm. frames for slides up to 59x59 mm.

Do not try to make your own frame format! It might work for you and could be better then other frames but it will never fit in available standard viewers and projectors!

  • You choose for 41x101 mm. frames when:
You want to project them in one (RBT) projector and don't want to mix up left and right frames or even loose one image. The stereo pair in one frame provides an excellent alignment with regards to both left and right image. Viewing or projection equipment will not mess-up your 'good' mounting work.
  • You choose for 50x50 mm. frames when:
Your camera provides images larger than 23x33 mm. or vertical aligned images (36x24 mm.). You use two separate 50x50 mm. projectors (Kodak or similar). You want to exchange the images with other equipment than 3D only.

8. I am an artist, I have taken pictures with a View-Master camera and want to show them to the public. My financial recources are limmited. What viewing system should I choose?
